Network Connectivity and Media Processing
The modern enterprise and service provider network is actually a diverse set of different communication networks. While the predominant networks today are IP and LTE, legacy networks such as the PSTN, 3G wireless, ATM, and even modem dial-up are still in use.
Connection and security to these IP networks is paramount for many services to work most effectively because most communication applications, even natively-designed IP applications, need to connect to the “outside world.”
Sangoma has many different options and solutions to allow you navigate the world of connecting to and transporting voice and data among the different communication networks.
Session Border Controllers (SBCs)
A typical firewall can only protect your data network at the packet layer. Sangoma SBCs protect your data and voice networks at the application layer, allowing for reliable and secure voice traffic.
Additionally, Sangoma SBCs can automatically translate codecs and audio with built-in interoperability and transcoding capabilities.
What is a VoIP Gateway?
Digital and analog VoIP gateways are most popularly used by businesses with a legacy phone system which wants to seamlessly connect to a SIP trunking service without having to change their infrastructure, keeping costs down. They can also be used by VoIP-enabled businesses that want to connect to the PSTN for failover or utilize legacy analog equipment, such as telephones and fax machines, in their IP network.
Service provider VoIP gateways are used by large organizations to offer telecommunication services to their customers, such as SIP trunking and Value-Added-Services (VAS), and to provide a clear migration path to an all-IP network.
Digital VoIP Gateways
Digital VoIP gateways are small stand-alone appliances which allow you to convert voice media between PRI (Primary Rate Interface) connections or BRI lines (UK) and VoIP connections.
Available in 1 to 8 ports of T1/E1/PRI for connecting TDM phone systems to VoIP networks and IP enabled networks to the PSTN.
Analog VoIP Gateways
Analog VoIP gateways are small stand-alone appliances which allow you to convert voice media between FXO and FXS connections and VoIP connections.
What are IP Phones?
IP phones, also known as VoIP phones, look similar in appearance to traditional desk phones, but are far more advanced. Like small computers, all the on-board features are applications, and the display and buttons can be customized by the user.
IP phones are wired using Ethernet cables and connect to an IP-based phone system, whereas traditional desk phones use an analog cable and typically connect to analog or legacy digital phone systems.
What allows IP phones to be so powerful is that they use an Internet protocol called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to send and receive audio.
